Jennifer Coppola At Home

Just when you thought I was done talking about the backyard, there’s another project that came along! The detached garage is a two car garage that now sits to the left of our house. It is two story with a full indoor staircase that leads to a loft with two windows on each end. The second story mimics an A-frame shape which we did on purpose since the front of our house has a similar exterior facade.
The plan for this garage is to have flexibility within the space by having a workshop for John, storage for tools and yard equipment that would typically go into a shed and of course, parking for one car. We went back to our favorite local business, J&L Amish Depot, to help draft the building plans, pour the concrete slab and to build the garage itself.
The concrete slab was poured within one day but took about 3-4 days to fully dry and cure. Cinderblocks were added during this time for the foundation. After this, it was time to wait until the concrete was dry for the next steps of the build.
The rest of the garage was built within two days. The interior contains 2x6 framing and electrical boxes for light switches and electrical outlets. We opted not to have drywall installed yet since John wants to decide where to put storage and possibly an enclosed closet at the back. The upstairs loft contains plywood as the floor and some plywood on the sides to prevent anything or anyone from falling through.
Over the next few months, the detached garage will get insulation, drywall and possibly a mini split unit for heating and AC. This may soon turn into a man cave for John but I am happy that we have the extra storage we need when we get a second car (eventually). The second car will fit into one of the garages and that’s what we wanted as well.
