It's hard to believe that I have not posted about my home office when I use it to write, edit, and post to Instagram for this blog! This is one of the first spaces that I started to create, but it has been a bit of a phased approach. I'll include what was done for Phase I as part of this post and look for Phase II coming soon, on why some things need to change.
Since I work from home three days a week and like to get creative, I needed a space that could do both. When John and I moved into this house, we decided that I would take the dedicated back room office, which is in the northeast corner of the house and very secluded. I do like cozy spaces and knew I could turn this into a functional yet personal space.
Home Office Furniture to Function
My last work desk was a Vari adjustable desk, which I unfortunately left for the new owners who bought my condo. I wanted the sale to go through, so I included a lot of my furniture that I knew I wanted to replace, and that Vari desk was one that I parted with a little too early. For the first month, I was working from home on a folding chair and foldable table, which is just as comfortable as it sounds. When I moved into the house, I decided to get another Vari desk that was slightly larger and had a darker wood finish on top. This desk was once again a great choice since I can easily adjust the height from a sitting position to standing with the touch of a button. My new desk also has a curved front edge, which is a nice feature that wasn't available on my original desk.
I decided to keep my existing office chair from the condo as my primary chair for both the work desk and my personal desk. Both desks are back-to-back, so moving the one chair across the room isn't too difficult.
For my personal/art desk, I went with a black Folsom desk from Pottery Barn with two matching bookcases. I love the look of the desk with the bookcases on either side, as this is functional and creates a nice background during my work video calls.
Finishing Touches
All of the art and photos are ones that I've had and still love. I did print out a few new wedding pictures and put those in existing frames, along with the wedding photos of parents and grandparents that were used at our wedding. The Kirkland's print of the world originated from my condo dining room and is now on the big wall in my office.
I did add new curtains that came from JCPenney. These were intended for the dining room, but once I realized that there was more green than blue, I decided to move them into my office. It's an interesting print that provides some color to the room, since most of it is neutral.
Light it Up
I rely heavily on the large double windows that let in tons of light in the morning, which is what I need to start my day. In the afternoons or on cloudy days, I turn on a simple floor lamp that lights up the corner of my work desk. On days when I need to use my other desk, I turn on the desk lamp.
What do you think of Phase I? Can you guess what some of the changes are for Phase II?
