Jennifer Coppola At Home

Since mid-January, I have been taking an online course from New York School of Interior Design (NYSID) that focused specifically on residential design. I have been interested in interior design, on and off, and decided to start taking courses to see how much I enjoyed it. Spoiler alert: I loved this class.
This past semester focused on creating two projects: one living room that contained a historical style with modern finishes and a loft apartment. The loft apartment design started from the ground up, meaning the floorplan needed to be drawn according to American Disability Act (ADA) requirements, include a main bedroom, two bathrooms, a laundry area, guest area and of course, the usual, kitchen, dining and living room spaces. It seemed like an impossible task but it turns out, that when working on this for 7 weeks, you can make it work.
The last 7 weeks was focused on the floorplan, elevations, 3D perspective drawing, furniture selections, and ensuring that I could present this successfully over Zoom. This class is the main reason why the blog needed to go quiet for a bit because not only did I not have time to write anything but I also didn’t have time to start any new projects in my house.
I don’t regret taking the class though. I learned so much about the design process, planning, sources for furniture, lighting and art that I am excited to take that knowledge and apply it into my house. I even learned a few things I did wrong already, like selecting furniture before the rug and art for a room, but I’ll do better next time.
In the meantime, look for more planning posts about the next projects in the house and some portfolio pieces coming soon.
