Planning the Bedroom Design

I am coming up on the second anniversary of moving into the house and am slightly ashamed to admit that the main bedroom in my house is still pretty empty and, well, a little sad. This space has not been prioritized because it is a place upstairs and away from all the main rooms in the house, so it's been easy to toss aside. Plus, the empty space hasn't impacted sleeping in there, so nothing to be concerned about in that regard. However, I realize it's time to make this space a beautiful retreat for those mornings when I don't want to get out of bed so quickly. Let me take you through the design plan for this room!

Design Concept

The overall design concept for this room is a warm retreat that feels cozy but not cluttered. The design challenge I am looking to solve is to make this room feel inviting and more intimate, which I'm referring to as the bedroom retreat design. Having a large bedroom isn't necessarily a problem, and I know plenty of people who would love a larger one. But after living here for almost two years, I have found that John and I don't really need such a large bedroom to fill with furniture and other belongings. We use this room to sleep and don't believe in having a TV in the bedroom. We also don't eat in the bedroom since our kitchen is downstairs, and the thought of getting food crumbs in the bed makes us cringe.

With the bedroom, I want to create more warmth without adding too many furniture pieces that may make the space more cluttered and harder to walk through. I have some ideas on how to achieve that, in terms of the paint colors and molding, that I will share soon.

Space Planning

I recreated the floor plan for all floors in our house after we moved in because I found out that the one given to us by the realtor was wrong. The room dimensions in my office were completely off, so I drew up the floor plan for all floors, including the second floor where our bedroom is located.

The room measures almost 13' x 23'8", has two single windows side by side, and the entry door, bathroom door, and closet door are located on one half of the room. This does make it easier to plan out the spaces since the doorway half of the room can't have any furniture, but it can make the visual design of the room a little lopsided and not as balanced. I am hoping to remedy that.

What do you think of the preliminary drawings so far?
